on and off, for several years, i have played a computer game called "dungeon crawl: stone soup". i tend to gravitate toward this habit when i am ostensibly in a "creative headspace" but not actively creating. i tell myself it gets the juices flowing. i think there is a kindred spirit running thru my creative work and this game. both are concerned with chance, random number generation, esoterica, and a certain air of shameless nerdiness. its visual element is obscure, austere, outdated, and reminds me of pure data. it is worth mentioning that i have never once beaten this game. i begin knowing i will inevitably fail, frustrated, wallowing, satisfied, eager. this is how it feels to perform live abstract electronic music, too.

there is a class of item in the game called "unrandom artefacts" ("unrandarts" or "unrands"). they are rare, bespoke talismans which confer a unique set of curses and/or blessings upon the wielder. as a low-stakes creative endeavour, i occasionally catalog new unrands that may exist in my life or yours. they are mysterious to me, i don't know what most of them are capable of. maybe i encountered them in my travels, or learned of them from friends, or glimpsed them in a dream. i archive them in the notes app on my cellphone.
